Banasura Sagar Dam

The Banasura Sagar dam in Kalpetta is regarded as the biggest earth dam in India and the second biggest in Asia.

Situated at the foothills of Banasura Hills, it is named after ‘Banasura’, the son of King Mahabali, an illustrious ruler of Kerala. According to local lore, Banasura carried out a penance on top of the hills. A picturesque tourist destination, Banasura Sagar dam is one of the most alluring places to visit in Wayanad. Renowned for its extensive natural beauty, flora and fauna, imposing hills and zesty waterfalls, another top attraction is the group of islands in the dam's reservoir.

They were created when the surrounding areas were submerged during the monsoons. This peculiar element also brings a lot of tourists to the dam. Boating, trekking, horse racing and camel rides are other activities in the area. The Banasura Hill Peak trek is regarded as one of the most difficult by experienced hikers. The small nature park close to the boating area is another option for a trip.
